The Children's Center

Our fourth quarter collective donation was joyfully received by The Children's Center. Smiles all around!! Together, we collectively raised $12,600. Our community impact is making a difference! The Children's Center is a local nonprofit that provides quality childcare and a multicultural, bilingual early childhood education for working families. It is provided five days a week, year round, from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The goal of The Children's Center is to provide a learning environment that enhances the physical, social, emotional, cognitive, linguistic, and creative development of each child. Our donation will be used as scholarship for the tuition assistance program and our funds will also directly support materials, books, and supplies for the children to use in the classrooms. We have truly fulfilled our mission when we can help others fulfill theirs.

Memory Matters

The 100+ Women Who Care Hilton Head Island made an impact once again in their community. This time, they were at Memory Matters to present their third-quarter collective donation. This local not-for-profit center supports families living with dementia by providing active day programming for participants and offers related caregiver respite. The gift bag of checks given to Memory Matters totaled and enabled them to purchase all new furnishings and necessary equipment for the newly built room which houses the Connections Program. This program expressly serves people newly diagnosed with memory loss. Many of these participants are women in their 60's who are grappling with declining cognition.  

"We can really feel where our donation went" said Ann Tucker and Jackie Ryan, co-founding members of the 100+WWCHHI chapter, as they "road tested" one of the many antimicrobial vinyl chairs purchased. Two other members, Lisa Medford and Barbara Popovsky, joined Sheila Strand, Executive Director of Memory Matters and Sarah Coffin, Board President for the gift bag presentation and tour of the facility on Wednesday, February 8, 2017. Thanks to the 100+Women Who Care Hilton Head Island, the people dealing with this difficult diagnosis have benefitted enormously.

Volunteers in Medicine

The devastation of Hurricane Matthew dampened our homes, but not our spirit of giving! This 100+ group of "lovely, charming, generous women" (as someone once referred to us) came together for our second quarter and collectively gave $10,800 to Volunteers in Medicine. This donation allowed the clinic to expedite the opening of the facility which impacted hundreds of patients left without medical care during forced closure for the storm. Our contribution came at a crucial time which allowed VIM to continue to provide vital services to those in need. The patients are the heart of VIM and their well-being is their mission. Our mission is to use the power of collective giving to support non-profit organizations serving Hilton Head Island. What a difference we have made!

Sandalwood Community Food Pantry

What a difference 100+ women can make in their community!  Our chosen recipient this quarter was Sandalwood Community Food Pantry and our collective donation totaled $11,000. 

SCFP was established in 2009 when one woman, Rev. Dr. Nanette Pierson, wanted to address the hunger of people in the community.  "Hunger hurts", she said, "and it takes a toll on their health and well-being."  The SCFP focuses on basic daily needs while also providing emotional and spiritual support.  The Pantry provides perishable and non-perishable groceries to eligible residents through its partnership with the Lowcountry Food Bank of South Carolina.  The Pantry purchases food when donations from local sources are not enough to support the needs of their people.

Our collective donation will be used to purchase much-needed food items and to buy clothing and toiletries for the homeless and hungry.  A small amount of funds may be set aside to provide emergency assistance, such as electricity or medicine.

Backpack Buddies

At our fourth quarter meeting, 100+ Women Who Care Hilton Head Island learned that our organization had been chosen to join hearts and hands with the Village of Wexford for their Day of Celebrating Women on May 18, 2016.  All proceeds collected would benefit the charity for which we voted.  Backpack Buddies was our selected organization.  

Backpack Buddies of Hilton Head serves 260 children in the three public elementary schools on the island.  Eligibility for Backpack Buddies is determined by social workers who are knowledgable about family need.  Every Friday, during the school year, designated children in kindergarten through fifth grade receive a bag of supplemental food items for the weekend. The annual cost of supporting one child through Backpack Buddies is $180.

On Friday, May 27, 100+WWCHHI and Sarah Perry, from Branches, presented Jeanie Silletti and Debbie Dunlap, directors of Backback Buddies, with a combined donation of $12,509.27.  This is a significant contribution and one that is certain to make an impact in our community!

Second Helpings

Our collective giving has once again made an impact on our island!  100+ Women Who Care Hilton Head Island proudly presented our third quarter recipient, Second Helpings, with a gift bag of checks totaling $7300!  The presentation to Maureen Korzik, Executive Director, took place in the courtyard outside her office, on Tuesday, February 9.

This organization, started in 1992, works to supply those in need with nourishing food.  The volunteers are on the road, seven days a week, rescuing food from area grocery stores that would have been thrown away.  They redistribute it to area agencies that serve the disadvantaged countywide.

Our donation will be used to make a difference right here at home!  Each volunteer team has a refrigerated truck to use for their assigned pickups and deliveries.  The food gets picked up in the morning and is delivered the very same day.  Our funds will be used to support the two trucks that deliver to those in need on our beloved Hilton Head Island.

The Low Country Retired Active Law Enforcement Association
Organized five years ago, their goal is to benefit local active and retired law enforcement officers, and their families, who have become ill, disabled, or killed in the line of duty.  Our donation will be used to provide a scholarship for either one or two children of officers who serve Hilton Head Island.  It will also be used to help a Deputy pay medical bills he has accumulated due to his present battle with cancer.

Neighbor Outreach Connection


Founded in 2008 by Dr Naren Sharma, NOC's mission is to help the poor and those who are vulnerable through its core programs including education (preschool, after-school, and adult education), health services, and workforce development.  Education is NOC's flagship program and the primary beneficiaries are children and women.  NOC started with only 5 children and, in just five years, has grown to more than 300 children.  It has a strong presence in the neighborhoods and makes a difference in the lives of many people, especially the children, living in low-income neighborhoods.
